Shikara boats are normally country boats modeled out with single roof and all four sides open. Thus it lets the cool air in easily. These are compact boats with a minimal luxury. Some of the Alleppey shikara boats are provided with toilets. Shikara boats are also provided with comfortable couches and inclined chairs for the tourists to relax. They can be used to easily travel through the narrow canals thereby exploring the inner beauty of Alleppey.

Houseboat (kettuvallom) is a country boat that was used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior village to the towns. With the advent of roads, bridges and ferry service,gradually the Kettuvalloms went off the scene.
